HLTI
International Master in Human Language Technology and Interfaces   About the Program
About the Program
Educational Goals and programs

Human language technology is becoming increasingly essential to cope with the huge amounts of textual information currently available e.g., in the scientific literature or through the Web, and gives people the possibility of using speech and/or natural language to access a variety of automated services such as airline reservation systems or voicemail. Service and technology providers are therefore strong supporters of this technology. The master in Human Language Technology and Interfaces (HLTI) offered by the University of Trento and ITC-IRST aims at providing skills in the basic theories, techniques, and applications of this technology through courses taught by internationally recognized researchers from the university, research centers and supporting industry partners. Students enrolled in the HLTI masters will gain in depth knowledge from these graduate courses, and from substantial practical projects carried out in research and industry labs.

Language

The official language of the Master is English. Written and oral examinations, as well as the thesis are in English.

Educational activities

The Master provides theory introductory courses on the theories and techniques of HLTI (20 credits) and advanced courses on technologies and HLTI applications (20 credits)
As a qualifying element, the Master program also provides a substantial practical activity in the HLTI labs, where the student faces the practical side of a particular problem (20 credits).
Finally, the student completes his/her educational path with a final examination (5 credits) that consists on a preparation and discussion of a dissertation based on the activity developed in the HLTI laboratory. The total of credits for the student is of 65.

Tutoring

Each student is assigned a tutor upon acceptance in the program. The tutor is a faculty member and can provide advice and continuous help on any academic activity. All students are required to consult frequently with their tutors throughout the master’s period.
For the period in the HLTI laboratory will be assigned a tutor (university staff or a tutor from a company) who will follow the student during the final project of the Master.

Students from other disciplines but with a solid mathematical and/or computational background - e.g. students from Linguistics or Phylosophy with strong mathematical/computational background - will also be considered.
Students with other background (Physics or Mathematics) may also apply, subject to approval.
